Chess Tourist vs Daler Vakhidov

This is a blast from the past. 2016 Penang Heritage Open.

I never looked at the game until today, 8 years later, although I knew the results because I asked Daler who was my room mate at that time.

Interesting to see even then the Tourist stubbornly plays his KID set up.

Back then I got to witness the discipline displayed by someone only 14 years old at that time. Every morning his father would come with a laptop and they would do preparation before the rounds start. Once I asked him to join me for breakfast but he said he could not because was waiting for his father (for prep).

So 14 year old ELO 1983 vs the “Chess Tourist” ELO 2122. What do you think is the result?

The game

I simply don’t understand the Exchange sacrifice!

Having Daler as room mate was memorable because he was very cheeky and naughty. English not very good but we could communicate at the basic level. He even taught me something in Uzbek which even though I don’t understand but am sure would offend others 🙂

Also I remember not accepting any friendly games versus him in the room, simply because I don’t want to suffer the mental humiliation losing to a 14 year old. He even challenged me in the pool, the little devil. He was competitive!!

Never met him again unfortunately but looking at his ELO history, he hit 2300+ but hasn’t dropped to 2176. At 21 years old he is now an FIDE master and teaching chess on Udemy. He even has his own YouTube channel. Just crossed 1K subscribers so that channel is monetizable.

Daler’s chess channel is here.
